In conclusion, in the peer-reviewed social science journal design study, â€Å"Applying Social Cognitive Career Theory to the Empowerment of Battered Women†, Chronister and Hawley McWhirter depict that when women leave an abusive environment without access to the necessary needs such as housing, safety, and financial assistance, women will experience failed attempts to escape as well as negative outcomes. Some examples of negative experiences are, police who downplay and validate the abuser’s behaviors as acceptable because she is married to the abuser and/or they have mutual children together, or women having no knowledge where shelters are located, and negative legal experiences which decrease the battered woman’s self-efficacy and empowerment pursuits as well as interests and goals. Qualitative research on domestic violence has long documented the debilitating impacts it has on women’s sense of self (see, e.g. Hoff, 1990; Kirkwood, 1993 in Westmarland a nd Kelly 1097). As domestic violence is likely to have pervasive negative effects on a woman and their occupation regarding self-efficacy, this article suggests that â€Å"with the application of the Self Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)† (Chronister and Hawley McWhirter 419), the outcome outlooks if there is a reduction in the availability of supports, presents comprehensive obstacles in the women’s growth of interests and the conversion of their selected interests into their goals and accomplishments.
